FRENCH
FAUVISM / MODERNISM
Henri Matisse was a French painter known for his bold use of color and his role as a leading figure of Fauvism. Matisse moved to Paris to study law before turning to art, eventually enrolling at the Académie Julian and later studying under Gustave Moreau at the École des Beaux-Arts. He developed a distinctive approach to painting that emphasized flattened forms, vibrant, non-naturalistic color, and fluid line to create harmony and emotional clarity. His subjects ranged from intimate interiors and portraits to decorative still lifes and luminous Mediterranean landscapes that radiated warmth and balance. Deeply influenced by Paul Cézanne, Islamic art, and Japanese prints, Matisse's work sought to simplify form and celebrate pure color as a vehicle for expression. Though he faced harsh criticism early in his career, particularly during the Fauvist exhibitions, he later became one of the most influential artists of the twentieth century, inspiring generations with his radical approach to color, composition, and decorative space.
