FAUVISM / CUBISM

Raoul Dufy was a French painter and designer known for his vibrant, decorative style and joyful depictions of modern life. Dufy studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, where he encountered Impressionism and later became associated with Fauvism, developing a distinctive approach to painting that emphasized brilliant color, fluid line, and simplified forms. He became especially known for his lively scenes of seaside leisure, regattas, and festive gatherings that conveyed a sense of movement and lightness. His subjects ranged from sunlit landscapes and urban celebrations to textile designs and decorative murals that reflected his interest in pattern and rhythm. Deeply influenced by Henri Matisse and the Fauvist emphasis on expressive color, Dufy's work captured a sense of pleasure and spontaneity that set him apart from his contemporaries. Though sometimes dismissed for its decorative quality, his art later became highly influential, admired for its innovative use of color and its contribution to modern design and painting.
